Visual Story Network

We plan to shoot a taiko/black gospel/hip hop fusion music video here in Japan in June of next year. Ideally, in 5.1 surround sound, HD, multiple cameras, all round highly professional. There will be a taiko troupe (perhaps ten players) and a choir of around 300 back gospel singers (mostly Japanese).

The goal is to visually show that Christianity is not just a Western import, that it is embedded in the culture. We will probably tie the video in with one or more "My Story" shoots of members of the choir.

You can view a video of the taiko group we will be working with at:
Scot Eaton is on one of the big drums, he is an ethnomusicology major at Bethel Univ grad school while working in Japan as an Eng. teacher. He writes for our blog, and is involved with CAN in other ways.

I think what we need to pull this off is a church who will sponsor it, providing some funding as well as skilled short term missionaries. But, we are open to working with anyone who is willing and able to do it.

If anyone in this group is interested in helping us with this, please let me know. Also, if you think you might know someone who is, let me know.

Thanks, Paul

A few questions... what is your target audience for this? What delivery system are you hoping for? What kind of budget are you planning for this? Is this for a DVD? A viral video? Most music videos don't have documentary style interviews imbedded in the video so are you thinking of a series of clips (ie music, then interviews, narration, etc.?) The project caught my attention at least.

Ireland's a long way from Tokyo but my friend Moya Brennan does it all the time for her concerts with Clannad.
Hi Durand,

Thanks for your questions! We recently posted a teaser on youtube:

Target Audience: Japanese, in particular those interested in black gospel and/or wadaiko, both of which are mainstream movements (not church based).

Delivery: We plan to use youtube.com as that is popular with Japanese, we hope it will go viral and we think that we will get media attention as this is a "first" as far as we know -- we plan to notify one of the main TV channels in Tokyo. We may also create a DVD.

Budget: Around $5,000

We will not imbed the documentary -- it will be a short stand alone doc that will provide background information and include interviews with participants -- most of whom will not be Christians.

We have a producer, a director, most of our equipment, and pretty much everything else in place except for adequate funding.

But, we do not have an editor booked yet. This is a critical role, we need a skilled person who is able to make the most of our footage.

Your questions are good, let me know if you have any more. I am also very happy to get advice -- this is our first music video.

We have a channel on youtube with several of our films posted: http://www.youtube.com/user/StudioReFilms

Thanks again Durand! Warmly, Paul
Take a look at some of our videos. It should give you an idea of our abilities in editing. Much of what we do are multi-camera edits from live performances (music theatre, bands, musicals, comedy acts, etc.) and editing is something we could do from here, as long as you were willing to send us a hard-drive with the rushes on it or duplicates of the tapes if they're shot on tape.

We just finished a video with TearFund Ireland who did a shoot in Cambodia with another cameraman we have never met. They then sent us the rushes on a hard drive. We did all the editing/post production. The video's not gone public yet, but I can send you a link and a password so you can review it (separately of course).

Watched the youtube. Am I to understand then that you're going to shoot 2-3 cameras at the live event with both the choir and the drum troupe? It seems to me that if you got footage of the entire concert properly "clapped" for sync, you could create a concert dvd of all the individual pieces, which could also be encoded for maximed streaming on youtube (both standard and HQ). We've done that for quite a few clients.

I've done some research on the whole viral thing... it's a lot more than good content that everyone tells everyone else about. That's what it's supposed to look like. But it's a lot more work than that. I will say though, your project's unique enough that there's good potential for a lot of views.

Gotta head to work. I'll send you an email with access to the TF video before I do.

Let's keep talking.

Durand
