I sent Rob a list of 34 other universities (most of them members of the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities - CCCU) who might be interested in the VSN. These are schools from a list of several hundred who I had previously identified as "likely to pursue emerging technologies in the immediate future". I'm not sure of their interest in film/visual story telling, but they may be good candidates for initial contact.

During a conference call yesterday, Paul Konstansky, (he's helping to organize the VSN event in September) mentioned the impact of travel costs on Orality Network attendees in Dallas this year.

For this reason, I think Jeremy's comment regarding virtual/remote attendance for cash-strapped students at future VSN events is highly relevant.

Nothing replaces human contact, but fuel prices aren't getting better. The VSN may end up vitally dependent on virtual environments and social networks like the one Jeremy has created right here on these pages.

Don,
I'm really interested in experimenting with this virtual participant idea in Dallas. Could we have multiple people on one screen (on one machine in Dallas) coming in from multiple locations? In particular I was thinking of adding people to the Training / Education Strategy Team roundtable virtually.

I think we may be able to design an event structure where students don't just participate virtually, but where each school location is treated like a satellite VSN event, with activities, tracks, and events that are unique to the location--a kind of "local, live discussion." This could be even better if we could invite local folks who aren't involved in the school to participate at the location closest to them. Parts of the main VSN event could be piped to each location, and some of the findings from each school site could be brought back to the main event for discussion and celebration.

This might also be the right time and place to invite local churches to participate in just a portion of the satellite events. Pastors and media ministers alike could come for one afternoon or evening for training and/or discussion.

There are a lot of ways to slice this, but I think--especially in a world that leans heavily on visual presentation--we could make it work.

Clyde-
Two-way participation is possible these days--and even relatively cheap--but it's also twice as likely to create problems. There are a lot of "duct tape" solutions that cost nothing at all, if you have a good internet connection and you are willing to deal with whatever problems that come up. There are also a lot of professional solutions that are much more reliable, but also a lot more expensive.

Again, there are a lot of ways to do this: the simplest might just be pushing a video and audio feed of the Dallas discussion to any remote participants (using something like USTREAM.TV), and simply conferencing remote participants in by phone.

To add to my last comment: in the last sentence, what I mean is, when we want to have participants interacting with people in Dallas, we could simply conference remote participants in by phone.

It's exciting to be part of this group and I hope to contribute my experiences in building on the projects the lay ahead.

I am all about connecting the church and film talent with the outside world from our experiences we have had.

I will be in North Carolina doing some presentations and taking a little break also in the coming weeks. No Internet in those mountains is what I have been told. So I will talk to you in a couple of weeks.

Sounds like things went great in Dallas. Sorry I could not make it. Keep the good work up.

I want to welcome Don and anyone else to the events we have coming and see the process of getting the word out in the public venues this fall.
Your welcome to stay at my house here in Cocoa Florida. We be doing events from Nov. through Dec. 31. See the schedule at Life Visual.com

Welcome Charlie, what is your interest and background in training?
Comment by Charlie Matz on November 19, 2008 at 1:50pm
Graham,
Thanks for the communication/question.
My background - Bub Kuns and I started The Veracity Project about 6 years ago to Train Filmmakers, Produce Content, and Place talented individuals in schools, jobs, and internships. From the training aspect, I've been mostly involved with beginner filmmakers - teaching a biblical foundation for storytelling. We call what we do a "springboard" to launch students into their "filmmaking journey" with the RIGHT bedrock and focus. After that initial teaching we do 1 on 1 discipleship "story training" with hand selected individuals - where we walk with them, creating project after project, giving them the practice and guidance (in the Lord) they need.

My interests are the same as my background really. From the production aspect, Bub Kuns and I work together, striving to create compelling content. We've been writing, producing and directing together for the same amount of time. We love it! and feel called to it! and would love to be blessed to continue down this path as long as the Lord says to!!!

Thanks for asking. Talk to you soon.

Charlie
