Three Steps to Becoming A More Visual Storyteller

We are a visually-driven generation, but then again, we’ve always been. Filmmaker Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption) says: “Visual storytelling of one kind or another has been around since cavemen were drawing on the walls.” Today, toddlers have iPads and play with cameras. We grow up with cameras in our phones, and people document every aspect of their lives. Just as important, more and more…See More

The Secrets For Producing a Great Video Interview

There's no arguing the power of an online video. It has the potential to make a powerful impact or a terrible impact.  One of the hardest to produce are interviews.  It can leave you feeling a little out of your control and in the hands of the interviewee.  There are a few keys that will give you the most effective interviews.  See my full post on my official blog: http://bit.ly/1c4fpdp Are there other great suggestions I left out?  Would be…See More

Terrorism, Media, and The Online Battle for Hearts and Minds

Whenever I hear about church and ministry leaders who refuse to engage today’s culture through digital, online platforms, I’m reminded of speaking at a media conference last year in Madrid. It was a gathering of “media missionaries” who are using the media in innovative ways to share the Christian faith throughout Europe and the Middle East. One of the producers quoted Gilles Kepel, a French academic and…See More

The 10 Commandments of Success in the Media World

I spoke to a class of university film students at Biola University in Los Angeles, who asked me to give them some career advice before graduation. A friend, award winning advertising writer David Morgenstern, shared some tips with me for the class that he had given to USC film students a few years ago, and they were so fantastic, I wanted to share them with you:1) Return every call and e-mail quickly. Show up on time, even if you’re the only one there. Dress like you deserve your salary.…See More

Directors: Five Critical Things You Need To Do On the Set

In the old days, directors were contract players, so they were directing nearly every day of their career. But in today’s freelance film and video world, most directors aren’t shooting more than once every two or three months. As a result, many directors don’t understand how to act on a set or how to lead. Here’s five things that have made an important difference for me on a film set or in a TV studio:1) Do your homework. Once you get to the studio, the cash register starts ringing. You’re…See More

Do Your Realize How Much Competition Your Idea Faces?

You may have the greatest idea in the world for a book, movie, business, or nonprofit. But when writing my book “Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media,” I discovered that today, living in the most cluttered culture in history, you also have to consider how to cut through all the competition and get noticed. Want to publish a book? In 2011,300,000 books were published by traditional publishers, and that doesn’t…See More

What Time of Day Are You The Most Creative?

Today, someone asked me the secret of my creative output. "Phil, how do you come up with your material for writing and speaking?" I answered him by saying that the single most important question for any creative person to ask is "What time of day am I most creative?" For me, it's 6am to noon. In the morning, I can write like mad. Everything is sharp, and I'm in a great mood. But AFTER lunch? Forget it. I can do phone calls, read, conduct interviews, meetings, etc. But if you need creative work…See More
