Design: The Language of a Generation

From bulletins to Web sites—why the medium sometimes matters as much as the message.

"Reconsider your church publications, worship graphics and images, product packaging, television programming, Web sites—anything you create—with a new attitude toward design. Rethinking the design elements of a project isn't merely a "cosmetic" issue—it's a fundamental way of looking at communication that connects with the audience or customer on a very deep and significant basis." The Tree of Life (Christianity Today movie review)

Malick's magnum opus about the beginning and end of the universe, and a Texas childhood in between.

"The Tree of Life manages to showcase both man's glory and his inestimable smallness. Life, in the end, is not about us making a mark. It's about tuning our ears to the symphony of life around us, paying attention to the bigger story, and doing our best to love each other and receive grace in the time we've been given." (Continued)

Why Do Prayers Go Unanswered?

"So, if unfulfilled prayer is not the result of our failure to live for Christ or unconfessed sin in our lives or inadequate faith, then what are we to make of the fact that our prayers are sometimes unanswered? Perhaps the answer is not found in what we do wrong when we pray, but in our failure to understand what Jesus meant when He said that we could move mountains and have whatever we ask for if we pray with faith." (Continued)

Why You Should Care About the Movie "Tree of Life"

"Finding “Christ figures” and “redemptive themes” in the movies can be overdone and convoluted, but if ever there were films where it was appropriate and natural, it would be Malick’s films." (Continued)

The New Christian Film Criticism

"But we rarely have thoughtful dialogue among these extremes, and thus are sorely lacking in any sort of useful, progressive engagement with cinema. If you propose in academic or professional film circles the notion of “Christian film criticism” as a serious discipline (in the sense that black film criticism or feminist film criticism is taken seriously), you will probably be laughed off. Thankfully, we are taking steps to change that." (Continued)

Wooing the arts (

By Steve Beard

"God still gifts people with the creative arts. This is the way they are wired. They might be involved in drama, cartooning, architecture, landscaping, painting, sculpting, recording, designing, editing, writing, photography, or filmmaking. Pastors and parents need to encourage the emerging Bezalels in their gifting the same way they would if someone sensed a call to be a pastor or missionary." (Continued)

Religious mystique endures (Christianity Today)

By Michael J. Gilmour

Bob Dylan "still points us toward that vague Other," says author.

Through the 1960s, Bob Dylan was hailed as a prophet, first of folk music, then of rock 'n' roll—at least by those who forgave him the heresy of having "gone electric."

But when rock's best-known Jew famously declared Jesus to be the answer, many fans turned on him. For five decades, Robert Allen Zimmerman, who turns 70 today, has shocked, mystified, baffled and intrigued fans with songs rife with biblical references, both Jewish and Christian, and no shortage of religious imagery. What's the Point of Worship? (Relevant Magazine)

Some of the most influential worship leaders weigh in on this vital question.

"Glorifying God is about praising Him through the warm, fuzzy feelings and the stark, mundane moments of worship. When the high becomes the norm, that’s not true worship—that’s manipulation. It’s why Christians are called to worship even when they don’t feel like it. In the moment, it can seem inauthentic—like going through the motions. But if worshipers open their hearts to the Spirit, this dynamic exchange—over time—can and will change them." (Continued)

Is Church Worth It?

"Why should twentysomethings not give up meeting together as the Church? The short answer is that the Bible says not to (Hebrews 10:25). But there are plenty of other practical arguments for the necessity—and ultimate privilege and thrill—of being a part of the Church." (Continued)

I love this quote . . .

"I don’t deny that there should be priests to remind men that they will one day die. I only say it is necessary to have another kind of priests, called poets, actually to remind men that they are not dead yet."

Humanity Around and Within

It's a slippery slope, letting go of the lines that divide, seeing people different from yourself as human.  Let the walls that make me an "us" and they a "them" crumble, and there is a world of humanity to love.  No longer can you ignore the vulnerability, the humanity, the absolute sinner and saint in all of us.  No longer can you push others aside or arbitrarily…

Hi Clint,

Thanks for your 'welcome'. I am looking forward to getting to know better all that VSN is facilitating. Ross Maclean (Thistle Channel TV) and myself (Christians Together) are working together in the Scottish Highlands to do what we can in our crazy world to spread the Gospel.
