"Literal Visual Bible Storying" - The Silent Film is Back!

Clyde,

As I read through your March 13 newsletter, I was struck again by your ministry title – Visual Story Network – and the world of the Deaf.  To them, it’s all visual.  While “interactive” methods ask and offer a lot for their world, literal visual Bible storying (based on Chronological Bible Storying) is having an immense one-on-one impact as Deaf storytellers(read: evangelists/church-planters) are going out into the mainstream Deaf public with the sign…

NEW eBOOK - Worth A Thousand Words: The Power of Images to Transform Hearts

"Because the Word made flesh is also the image of the invisible God, this book matters.  Enabling the reader to connect God’s eternal Word with the reality of how images are used today, this book paints a strong picture—while offering ample explanation—of how to unearth and communicate God’s presence and purpose embedded in the ever-shifting visual swirl of our culture.  It’s a book worth more than a cursory read; it’s worth your attention"  - Connally Gilliam,…

How Would You Make the VSN Online Community More Dynamic?

We want to get new ideas for making the VSN online community more interactive.  We started with a few people and a few questions.  Please add your insights below.

When you come to the VSN community, what do you look for? What do you seek to offer?

Romans 15:4 and the Storyteller

I've been spending a fair amount of time in Romans lately.   It struck me that this verse has much to say about our storytelling.

"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." (Romans 15:4)

I think this verse has much to offer regarding our visual stories.  Here are a few observations.

#1.  If the purpose of…

Delivering To The Tribes

I've been talking with many people about delivery of visual media to various audiences that are outside the 'mainstream'. I think there are many tribes of people who share some common beliefs that make them Christian, but there are many other passions that make them very different when it comes to creative things like music, art, and film. More importantly, there are tribes who might be open to spiritual stories that we are telling but are not part of our own tribe.

The question I… Continue

Walter Brueggemann On Visual Media In The Church

Can we have our pictures and speak about them too?

We sat down to an intimate chat with Walter Brueggemann and asked about the role of visual media in the church. As an Old Testament scholar, Dr. Brueggemann brings rich understanding to the notion of "speech." We wondered if his understanding of speech might be in conflict with our understanding of visual media. Despite our muttered ramblings, Dr.Brueggemann responded with penetrating insight, his sage wisdom infused with disarming… Continue
