Wow! I just watched the movie last night for the first time. I was stunned by several things...

1. its messages about the Bible.
2. the fact that I never really knew how powerful the message was (I keep my eyes open for these kinds of features). I'd love to hear the thoughts of others about this film.

My description: Apostle Paul meets Dirty Harry meets Yoda in a post-nuclear winter world.

My take on some of the key messages:

The Bible is critical to modern (and any future) civilization.
The Bible has power (whether abused or handled properly).
We've got to be diligent about running our race / finishing the course.

Your thoughts?

I love the movie. Saw it opening night in a packed theater. Everyone loved it too - for the most part. But when the big reveal came about the Bible, you could hear people afterward not being sure what to make of it.  Well acted and great special effects. A strong story that made you think on many levels.

One of them being the issue of physical violence. Some think that violence is never warranted, however, there are times when it may be necessary after all other diplomatic methods have been tried. (After all, do you protect yourself when an enemy is unrelenting in trying to kill you?) After all, many of the liberties we enjoy (and take for granted) today were gained during violent times. Ecclesiates says that there is a time under the sun for everything - a time for war and a time for peace. For me this movie raises the issue that it's not about whether we will have to fight or not - but "how" we fight.

Matt,

Whoa! That is interesting. Go Gary and go Denzel.

Some very profound messaging here, but integral to the story.

I talked to Gary Whitta last month (the writer)- he said he wrote it because he needed to write something about the importance of personal faith. I think he definitely accomplished that.

At one point the studio fired him because he refused to take out the spiritual content after they had bought the screenplay, so they brought in another writer. After the spiritual content was removed they gave the script back to Denzel, who had already wanted to do it, and Denzel, being a Christian, told them they took out all the stuff that made him want to make the movie. So they brought back Gary.

It's interesting what's going on in the studios right now... really we just need more Christian movie stars that can get these things made.
