Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of these, 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim (98% of the cases).

Most of the time, women is held responsible for the rape. Many women commit suicide because of stigma and shame. However, main concern remains the unwillingness of rape victim to come out and report the crime. Social and family pressure forces the rape victim not to report the crime to police.

Kamala is a story inspired by the recent event that happened in North India where a minor was raped by a doctor and she became pregnant. The family was so ashamed that they got the permission from Supreme Court to get the 25-week foetus aborted. That is the day I decided to make a film with the different ending. In the story where a mother or unborn do not have to die.


The story of a young girl Kamlaa, the unfortunate domestic help who after being raped by her employer becomes pregnant. She is forced to face a dilemma of choosing between "a life of shame and stigma" or "killing the unborn". However, she takes the third route...
